Budget 2027's KL Covered Walkway: Will It Reach Your Condo?

Budget 2027 announces a 22 km KL covered walkway and names Masjid Negara, Dataran Merdeka and Pasar Seni. See what a condo buyer can verify.

Short answer: Malaysia’s Budget 2027 speech says DBKL will build a 22 km covered pedestrian walkway linking landmarks such as Masjid Negara, Dataran Merdeka and Pasar Seni. It also describes covered links from residential areas to shops, schools, clinics and public transport. The speech does not give a street-by-street alignment, an opening date or a list of condos that will connect.

The Announcement Names Destinations, Not Condo Entrances

The route figure is a programme length, not a promise of a 22 km walk from any one home. The Prime Minister’s Office English version confirms the same landmarks and the broader aim of connecting residential areas with daily destinations.

For a buyer, the missing detail is the part that matters most: which pavement, crossing and station entrance would you actually use? A listing that says a condo will be “on the covered walkway” needs a more specific, official alignment before you treat the claim as a property feature.

Which Areas Sit Closest to the Named Landmarks

Named landmarks only

Not the proposed walkway alignment.

The three landmarks the speech names sit close together in KL’s old city core. Masjid Negara is the mosque directly beside KL Sentral, on the Brickfields boundary. Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square) and Pasar Seni (Central Market) sit about 1km north of that, anchoring the Central Market and Petaling Street (Chinatown) stretch.

That clustering is the only basis for guessing which areas are worth checking once an official alignment is published: condos in Brickfields, the Chinatown/Petaling Street stretch, and the Masjid Jamek vicinity sit closest to the named points. This is a geographic inference from the three landmarks the speech names, not a confirmed beneficiary list, the speech itself names no project, street or building. Treat it as a reason to shortlist those areas for your own walk-test, not as a reason to pay a premium for a unit in them today.

Test the Walk That Exists Today

Start at the unit’s actual lobby exit, rather than a map pin in the middle of the development. Walk to the station or daily destination you would use, at roughly the time you would normally travel. Notice whether the route has:

  • Continuous shelter
  • Safe crossings
  • An accessible entrance
  • A useful way back in the rain

That test matters even if a future link is eventually built. A short straight-line distance can still mean a long or awkward walk around a junction, fence or station entrance.

Three-step buyer method: walk today's route, verify the plan, then price the unit

Ask For the Exact Planned Section Before Paying For It

If a seller or marketing brochure relies on the Budget announcement, ask for the official document that shows the claimed section’s alignment, phase and expected opening date. Then compare it with the building’s pedestrian entrance and the destination you care about.

Use the existing route and the condo’s other merits to judge today’s asking price; treat a future walkway connection as upside, not as something you can price in yet. If you are comparing neighbourhoods more broadly, the KLCC, Mont Kiara and Bangsar area guide is a separate starting point; check the walk from each shortlisted building for yourself.

If you have two KL condos in mind, send the names and the route you need on WhatsApp to start a shortlist discussion.

Is There a Budget 2027 Route Map for My Condo?

The Budget speech, paragraph 46, does not include a street-level map or name individual condo connections. Ask for a later official alignment for the particular section before relying on a route claim.
